To convert square feet to acres, divide by 43,560: 10,000 sq ft = 0.2296 acres, 5,000 sq ft = 0.1148 acres and 20,000 sq ft = 0.4591 acres. For acres to square feet, multiply by 43,560, so a quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft and 1 acre is 43,560 sq ft. The calculator also takes a lot's length and width, and shows square meters, hectares, square yards and square miles.
It is for home buyers reading a listing, owners checking a plat or tax record, landscapers pricing sod or seed by area, and anyone comparing an American listing in acres with a metric one in m² or hectares.
How to use the converter
- Choose "An area" and type the number, then pick its unit (sq ft, acres, m², hectares, square yards or square miles).
- Pick the unit to convert to. All other units are listed below the main answer.
- For a lot, choose "Lot length × width" and enter both sides in feet or meters; the result is in acres.
- Use the swap link to reverse the conversion, and Share to keep the link.
Formula and source
acres = square feet ÷ 43,560 and square feet = acres × 43,560. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C defines the acre as 43,560 square feet (and 640 acres as a square mile). The number comes from the old English acre of 1 furlong × 1 chain: 660 ft × 66 ft = 43,560 sq ft.
Since January 1, 2023, NIST and the National Geodetic Survey have retired the U.S. survey foot, so the foot behind the acre is the international foot of exactly 0.3048 m. One square foot is therefore 0.09290304 m² and one acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m². The hectare is 10,000 m² (BIPM SI Brochure), so 1 acre = 0.404686 ha.
Most-searched square feet to acres
10,000 sq ft to acres
10,000 sq ft = 0.22957 acres (929 m²). A 10,000 sq ft lot is just under a quarter acre (a quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft).
5,000 sq ft to acres
5,000 sq ft = 0.11478 acres (464.5 m²). A 5,000 sq ft lot, such as 50 × 100 ft, is a common city lot and a little over a tenth of an acre.
20,000 sq ft to acres
20,000 sq ft = 0.45914 acres (1,858.1 m²). Twenty thousand square feet is a bit less than half an acre (21,780 sq ft).
7,500 sq ft to acres
7,500 sq ft = 0.17218 acres (696.8 m²). A 75 × 100 ft suburban lot is 7,500 sq ft.
2,000 sq ft to acres
2,000 sq ft = 0.04591 acres (185.8 m²). Two thousand square feet is the size of a mid-size house's floor area, not a lot; on the ground it is less than a twentieth of an acre.
1,000 sq ft to acres
1,000 sq ft = 0.02296 acres (92.9 m²). One thousand square feet is about 2.3% of an acre.
100,000 sq ft to acres
100,000 sq ft = 2.29568 acres (9,290.3 m²). One hundred thousand square feet, the size of a big-box store footprint, is about 2.3 acres.
Acres to square feet
1 acre in square feet
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft (4,047 m², 0.4047 ha). That is about 208.7 ft on each side if the acre is square, but an acre can be any shape.
0.25 acres in square feet
0.25 acres = 10,890 sq ft (1,012 m², 0.1012 ha). A quarter acre is the classic suburban lot size.
0.5 acres in square feet
0.5 acres = 21,780 sq ft (2,023 m², 0.2023 ha). Half an acre is 21,780 sq ft, roughly 147.6 ft square.

Lot dimensions to acres
Lot sizes are often given as frontage × depth. Multiply the two sides for square feet, then divide by 43,560. These are rectangle sizes for illustration, not zoning minimums, which vary by town.

Worked examples
Acreage from a listing
A listing gives a lot as 12,632 sq ft. 12,632 ÷ 43,560 = 0.29 acres, a bit over a quarter acre.
An irregular lot
An L-shaped lot splits into a 120 × 80 ft rectangle and a 40 × 50 ft rectangle: 9,600 + 2,000 = 11,600 sq ft = 0.266 acres. For a triangle, use half of base × height.
Metric listing to acres
A plot is 2,500 m². 2,500 ÷ 4,046.8564 = 0.618 acres, or 26,910 sq ft.
Seeding a lawn
Grass seed is often sold by coverage per 1,000 sq ft, while fertilizer for fields is rated per acre. A half-acre lot minus a 2,400 sq ft house footprint and 1,200 sq ft of driveway leaves 21,780 − 3,600 = 18,180 sq ft of lawn, or 0.417 acres.
Common mistakes
- Using 43,000 or 40,000. The acre is 43,560 sq ft. Using 40,000 overstates a 10,000 sq ft lot as 0.25 acre instead of 0.23.
- Adding perimeter instead of multiplying sides. A 100 × 150 ft lot is 15,000 sq ft, not 500.
- Mixing building and land area. A house's finished square footage counts every floor; lot acreage is ground area only.
- Converting meters as if they were feet. Convert meter sides to feet (÷ 0.3048) or multiply m² by 10.7639 before dividing by 43,560.
- Treating a hectare as an acre. A hectare is about 2.47 acres.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet. That is also 4,840 square yards and 4,046.86 square meters.
How do you convert square feet to acres?
Divide the square feet by 43,560. For example, 10,000 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 0.2296 acres.
How do you convert acres to square feet?
Multiply the acres by 43,560. 0.25 acre × 43,560 = 10,890 sq ft, and 2 acres = 87,120 sq ft.
How many acres is 10,000 square feet?
0.2296 acres, just under a quarter acre.
How do I find the acreage of a lot from its dimensions?
Multiply length by width in feet to get square feet, then divide by 43,560. A 100 × 150 ft lot is 15,000 sq ft = 0.3444 acres.
What are the dimensions of one acre?
An acre has no fixed shape. A square acre is about 208.71 ft on each side; the traditional acre was 1 furlong by 1 chain, 660 × 66 ft = 43,560 sq ft.
How many square meters and hectares is an acre?
1 acre = 4,046.8564 m² = 0.404686 hectares. One hectare (10,000 m²) is 2.4711 acres.
Did the acre change when the U.S. survey foot was retired?
Only in the fourth decimal of a square meter. The acre is still 43,560 sq ft, but since 2023 it uses the international foot: 4,046.8564 m² instead of 4,046.8726 m² with the old survey foot, a difference of about 4 parts per million.
How many acres is a square mile?
640 acres. A quarter section of land is 160 acres and a quarter-quarter section is 40 acres.
Is 'sf' the same as square feet?
Yes. sf, sq ft, sqft and ft² all mean square feet. Real estate listings often use SF for building area and acres for land.
