Each FRQ point is worth about 1.5% of the composite, almost twice a multiple-choice question. By our estimate, a 5 takes roughly 70% of the weighted total.

How this estimate works: each section counts at the weight in College Board's Course and Exam Description, and each free-response question counts in proportion to its rubric points because College Board publishes only the section weight. The 70/55/40/25% cutoffs are our round-number estimates. College Board publishes no composite cutoffs and says AP exams are not curved: cut scores are set in standard-setting studies, so the distribution above shows how students did, not where the lines sit. Wrong multiple-choice answers cost nothing.
How to use this AP Biology score calculator
- Enter how many of the 60 multiple-choice questions you expect to answer correctly. Leave out guesses you doubt; blanks and wrong answers both score zero.

AP Biology units and exam weightings
The AP Biology Course and Exam Description (the current edition, labeled effective Fall 2025) lists eight units. The weightings apply to the multiple-choice section; the free-response section is built separately, and each of the four short questions focuses on a different big idea and a different unit.

Natural Selection, Cellular Energetics and Gene Expression together make up roughly 37–52% of the multiple-choice questions. The CED also weights skills: Concept Explanation is 25–33% of multiple choice and Argumentation 20–26%, so most questions ask you to explain or justify, not just recall. Questions come alone or in sets of typically four to five that share one stimulus.
AP Biology FRQ scoring: the six question types
Every free-response question has four parts, A through D. Readers score against a rubric that lists each point separately, so a response earns a point when it contains the idea the guideline asks for. Style, length and extra detail do not add points.
Question 1: Interpreting and Evaluating Experimental Results (9 points)
You get an authentic research scenario with data in a table, graph or both. The CED splits the points as Part A (1) describe a concept, Part B (3) identify methods or describe data, Part C (3) identify methods, analyze data or calculate, and Part D (2) make and justify a prediction. On the 2026 exam (plant stomata and a receptor called DORN1), points included naming the three parts of a nucleotide, identifying the dependent variable, justifying the buffer-only control and the positive control, reading two figures, and predicting then justifying the effect of a receptor mutation.
Question 2: Interpreting and Evaluating Experimental Results with Graphing (9 points)
The data come in a table and you build the graph. The CED split is Part A (1), Part B (4) construct the graph, Part C (2) analyze data, calculate, state a null hypothesis or predict, and Part D (2) predictions and justification. In the 2026 guidelines Part B had four separate points: correct graph type, data and error bars plotted accurately, labeled axes and legend, and using error bars to decide which groups were statistically the same. Part C included a percent-change calculation.
Questions 3 to 6: the short FRQs (4 points each)
- Q3 Scientific Investigation: a lab scenario. One point each for describing a concept, identifying procedures (for example, the control groups), stating a null hypothesis or predicting results, and justifying the prediction.
- Q4 Conceptual Analysis: a biological phenomenon with a disruption. Describe, explain, predict the effect of the change, and justify it. The 2026 version was meiosis, nondisjunction and triploidy.
- Q5 Analyze Model or Visual Representation of a Biological Concept or Process: a model or diagram. Describe what it shows, explain relationships in it, represent a relationship, and connect it to a larger principle (in 2026, storm intensity, toe pad size and speciation in anoles).
- Q6 Analyze Data: a graph or table. Two points for describing data, one for using data to evaluate a hypothesis, and one for linking results to biology (in 2026, a box plot of raptor populations and ecosystem resilience).
Worked examples
Strong multiple choice, average FRQs. 42 of 60 multiple-choice correct, then 6, 6, 3, 3, 2, 3 on questions 1–6 (23 of 34 FRQ points). Composite: 68.8%, an estimated 4.
Average multiple choice, strong FRQs. 30 of 60 multiple-choice correct, then 8, 8, 4, 4, 4, 4 (32 of 34 FRQ points). Composite: 72.1%, an estimated 5. The second student answered 12 fewer multiple-choice questions correctly but scored higher, because the free-response points carry more weight each.

AP Biology exam date for May 2027
The 2027 AP Biology exam is on Monday, May 3, 2027, in the afternoon session. It runs 3 hours: 90 minutes of multiple choice in Bluebook, then 90 minutes of free response written on paper.
How to raise your AP Biology score using the rubric
- Answer the task verb. "Identify" needs a short answer with no elaboration; "justify" needs evidence plus reasoning. Describing when the question says explain leaves out the how or why the point needs.
- Practice the graph. Three graphing points in question 2 are pure technique: pick the right graph type, plot the error bars, and label both axes with units plus a legend.
- Know what error bars mean. The 2026 guidelines rewarded spotting overlapping error bars as "statistically the same". The same skill shows up in multiple choice.
- Name controls precisely. Say what the control is compared against and why. Both 2026 long questions and question 3 awarded points for justifying a control.
- Do not skip a part. Every part is scored on its own, so a wrong Part A does not stop you earning Part D.

College Board does not publish composite cutoffs. This calculator uses about 70% of the weighted composite as the estimated line for a 5. For example, 30 of 60 multiple-choice questions plus 32 of 34 free-response points gives about 72.1%, an estimated 5.
How many points is the AP Biology free-response section?
The six free-response questions are worth 34 points in total: questions 1 and 2 are worth 9 points each and questions 3 through 6 are worth 4 points each. Together they count for 50% of the score.
Is an FRQ point worth more than a multiple-choice question on AP Biology?
Yes, under the published section weights. One multiple-choice question is worth about 0.83% of the composite, while one free-response rubric point is worth about 1.47%, because 34 points carry the same 50% as 60 questions.
How is the AP Biology graphing question scored?
Question 2 is worth 9 points. In the 2026 scoring guidelines, three of them were for the graph: one for choosing the correct graph type (a bar graph), one for accurately plotting the data and error bars, and one for correctly labeled axes and legend. Which AP Biology unit is weighted the most?
