Cm to feet formula
NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C fixes 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm, both exact since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement.

Round the total inches first, then split. Otherwise 182.8 cm (71.97 in) prints as "5 ft 12 in" instead of 6 ft 0 in. The calculator does this for you.

Average height in feet and cm
The CDC's National Center for Health Statistics measures heights in the NHANES survey. For August 2021 to August 2023, the mean height of US adults aged 20 and over was 68.9 in for men (5 ft 9 in, 175 cm) and 63.5 in for women (5 ft 3 1/2 in, 161.3 cm). These are averages, not targets; children's heights should be compared with a growth chart, not adult figures.
Worked examples
A visa form asks for height in cm; you are 5′4″
(5 × 12 + 4) × 2.54 = 64 × 2.54 = 162.56 cm. Most forms want a whole number, so enter 163.
A European size chart says 188 cm
188 ÷ 2.54 = 74.02 in → 6 ft and 2.02 in = 6 ft 2 in.
A doorway is 203 cm tall
203 ÷ 30.48 = 6.66 ft, which is 6 ft 7 7/8 in to the nearest eighth, just under 6′8″ (203.2 cm).
A child measures 4 ft 2½ in
50.5 in × 2.54 = 128.27 cm.
Common mistakes
- Reading decimal feet as feet and inches. 5.58 ft is not 5 ft 58 in or 5 ft 5.8 in — multiply the decimal by 12: 5 ft 7 in.
- Dividing cm by 30 or 2.5. Both are off by about 1.6%, enough to lose an inch on a tall person.
- Splitting before rounding. Round total inches, then split, or you can get 12 inches in the inch column.
- Using a height chart for lengths in millimeters. For small parts, use mm ↔ Inches.
