International foot: 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 m = 3.28084 ft.

Height charts usually round to the whole inch; the 1/4 in line shows how close the value is to the next inch.

To convert meters to feet, divide by 0.3048 (or multiply by 3.28084); to convert feet to meters, multiply by 0.3048. So 1 m is 3.2808 ft, 1.8 m is 5.906 ft (5′ 11″) and 1.6 m is 5.249 ft (5′ 3″). The converter above gives decimal feet, feet and inches to the nearest quarter inch and to the whole inch, plus centimeters and yards. Switch it to "feet and inches → meters" for the reverse, including large values such as altitudes.

Most people look up meters to feet for height: a passport, visa or medical form in one system, a dating profile or sports roster in the other. The full height chart below lists every centimeter from 1.40 m to 2.10 m. The same converter also handles room sizes, pool depths, ceiling heights and elevations.

How to convert meters to feet and inches

  1. Divide the meters by 0.0254 to get total inches: 1.75 m ÷ 0.0254 = 68.9 in.
  2. Divide the inches by 12. The whole number is feet: 68.9 ÷ 12 = 5 remainder 8.9.
  3. Round the remainder to the precision you need. To the nearest inch that is 5 ft 9 in; to the nearest quarter, 5 ft 9 in.
  4. For decimal feet only, divide meters by 0.3048: 1.75 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.741 ft. Do not read the decimal as inches (5.74 ft is not 5 ft 7.4 in; see below).

The constants come from NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C: 1 foot = 0.3048 meter (exactly) and 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters (exactly), so 1 inch = 0.0254 m. NIST SP 811 prints the foot-to-meter factor 3.048 × 10⁻¹ in bold, marking it exact. The reciprocal, 3.280839895…, never ends, which is why 3.28084 is a rounded factor and dividing by 0.3048 is the exact route.

1.8 m in feet

1.8 m = 5.9055 ft = 5 ft 11 in to the nearest inch. On a height chart that reads 5′ 11″, but the exact value, 5 ft 10 3/4 in, is a quarter inch short of 5′ 11″. Six feet is 1.8288 m, so 1.80 m is about 2.9 cm under six feet.

1.6 m in feet

1.6 m = 5.2493 ft = 5 ft 3 in to the nearest inch. Here the rounding is tiny: the exact value is 62.99 in, so 1.6 m is almost exactly 5′ 3″. 1.60 m and 160 cm are the same height.

1 m in feet

1 m = 3.2808 ft = 3 ft 3 in to the nearest inch. One meter is 39.37 inches, about 3 ft 3 1/4 in, and a little longer than a yard (0.9144 m).

1.64 m in feet

1.64 m = 5.3806 ft = 5 ft 5 in to the nearest inch. The exact value is 64.57 in, 5 ft 4 1/2 in to the nearest quarter inch, so it rounds up to 5′ 5″.

1.65 m in feet

1.65 m = 5.4134 ft = 5 ft 5 in to the nearest inch. The exact value is 64.96 in, almost exactly 5′ 5″. 1.64 m and 1.65 m both round to the same whole inch.

1.83 m in feet and inches

1.83 m = 6.0039 ft = 6 ft 0 in to the nearest inch. 1.83 m is 72.05 inches, 6 ft 0 in to the nearest quarter. That is just 1.2 mm over six feet, so for everyday purposes 1.83 m and six feet are the same height.

18,000 feet to meters

18,000 ft = 18,000 × 0.3048 = 5,486.4 m, about 5.49 km. In US aviation that altitude is a fixed boundary: under 14 CFR § 71.33, Class A airspace runs from 18,000 feet MSL up to and including FL600. If old survey data used the U.S. survey foot (1200/3937 m), the same 18,000 ft would be 5,486.411 m, only 1.1 cm more. NIST retired the survey foot for new work after December 31, 2022, so use 0.3048.

Why decimal feet and feet-and-inches look different

A converter that only prints decimal feet can mislead with heights. 1.75 m is 5.74 ft, and it is tempting to read that as 5 ft 7 in. It is really 5 ft 9 in, because 0.74 ft × 12 = 8.9 in. The rule: the part after the decimal point is a fraction of a foot, not a count of inches. The feet to inches converter covers this in detail, and the decimal feet to feet and inches tool rounds to tape-measure fractions.

How much precision does a height need?

One centimeter is 0.394 inch, so consecutive centimeters often round to the same whole inch (1.64 m and 1.65 m both become 5′ 5″), and sometimes an inch is skipped. A whole inch is fine for forms. If you are comparing two heights or tracking a child's growth, keep the centimeters or use the quarter-inch result.

Worked examples

  • Ceiling height 2.4 m: 7.874 ft, 7 ft 10 in.
  • Room 4.5 m long: 14.76 ft, 14 ft 9 in.
  • Pool depth 1.2 m: 3.94 ft, 3 ft 11 in.
  • Height 5′ 4″ to meters: 64 in × 0.0254 = 1.6256 m.
  • 100 m sprint in feet: 328.1 ft.

Common mistakes

  • Using 3.3 or 3.28. 3.3 overstates by about 0.6%: 1.8 m × 3.3 = 5.94 ft instead of 5.91. That is 0.41 in too tall: fine for a guess, not for a form.
  • Reading decimal feet as inches. 5.25 ft is 5 ft 3 in, not 5 ft 2.5 in.
  • Mixing meters and centimeters. Enter 165 cm with the cm unit, or 1.65 with m. 165 m is a building, not a person.
  • Rounding twice. Convert meters to total inches first, then split into feet and inches. Rounding the decimal feet first can shift the result by an inch.
