To convert grams to pounds, divide by 453.59237. 100 g is 0.2205 lb, 500 g is 1.1023 lb (1 lb 1.64 oz) and 1,000 g is 2.2046 lb. To convert pounds to grams, multiply by 453.59237: 1 lb is 453.6 g and 2 lb is 907.2 g. The factor is exact because the pound is legally defined as 0.45359237 kg.
Use it for metric recipes in a US kitchen, European food packs, postage, gym plates or anything weighed on a gram scale. Results are shown as decimal pounds and as pounds-and-ounces, the way a US kitchen or baby scale reads, plus ounces and kilograms.
How to use the grams to pounds converter
- Choose grams → pounds, pounds → grams, or kilograms → pounds.
- Enter the weight; decimals and simple fractions are accepted.
- Read decimal pounds for calculations and pounds + ounces for a scale or label.
- Compare your amount with common pack sizes on the chart.
Grams to pounds formula
NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C and the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 both define 1 pound = 453.592 37 grams, and 1 ounce as 1/16 of that, 28.349523125 g.
pounds = grams ÷ 453.59237(≈ grams × 0.00220462)grams = pounds × 453.59237ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125, then 16 oz = 1 lb for pounds + ounces
Shortcut: grams ÷ 454 is accurate to 0.1%, and "double the kilograms and add 10%" gets pounds to within 0.2% for kitchen amounts.
500 grams to pounds
500 g = 1.1023 lb = 1 lb 1.64 oz. A 500 g European pack of pasta is about 1.6 oz more than a US 1 lb box.
454 grams to pounds
454 g = 1.0009 lb, effectively one pound. The exact pound is 453.59237 g; 454 g is the rounding seen on dual-labelled US packages.
100 grams to pounds
100 g = 0.2205 lb = 3.53 oz, a little under a quarter pound.
1,000 grams (1 kg) to pounds
1,000 g = 2.20462 lb = 2 lb 3.27 oz. For body weight and anything over a few kilograms, the Kg ↔ Lbs converter is quicker.

Common package sizes in pounds
The same product is often sold in round grams in Europe and round ounces in the US. These are typical label weights, converted exactly.
| Package | Grams | Pounds | lb + oz |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stick of butter (US, 4 oz) | 113 | 0.249 | 4 oz |
| Bar of chocolate (EU) | 100 | 0.22 | 3.5 oz |
| Bag of pasta (EU) | 500 | 1.102 | 1 lb 1.6 oz |
| Box of pasta (US, 16 oz) | 454 | 1.001 | 1 lb 0 oz |

| Coffee bag (US, 12 oz) | 340 | 0.75 | 12 oz |
Worked examples
A British recipe needs 675 g of potatoes
675 ÷ 453.59237 = 1.488 lb, or 1 lb 7.8 oz. A 1½ lb bag (680 g) is just right.
Buying 2.5 lb of chicken in a metric shop
2.5 × 453.59237 = 1,134 g, about 1.13 kg.
A 20 kg plate in pounds
20,000 g ÷ 453.59237 = 44.09 lb. Gym plates labelled 45 lb weigh 20.41 kg, a little more than 20 kg.
Postage for a 340 g parcel
340 g = 0.75 lb = 12 oz, so it is under a pound but over 12 oz.
Common mistakes
- Reading 1.1 lb as 1 lb 1 oz. 0.1 lb is 1.6 oz. Use the pounds + ounces result for scales.
- Treating 500 g as a pound. It is 10.2% heavier.
- Converting volume with this factor. Grams to cups or millilitres needs a density: try Grams ↔ Cups.
- Rounding the factor to 450. It is 0.8% low; on 5,000 g it gives 11.11 lb instead of 11.02 lb.
