To convert ounces to pounds, divide by 16. There are exactly 16 ounces in a pound, so 8 oz is 0.5 lb, 12 oz is 0.75 lb, 20 oz is 1.25 lb (1 lb 4 oz) and 32 oz is 2 lb. To go from pounds to ounces, multiply by 16: 2.5 lb is 40 oz.
The converter gives both forms people actually use: decimal pounds (1.25 lb) for spreadsheets, shipping software and recipes scaled by weight, and pounds-and-ounces (1 lb 4 oz) for baby weights, bathroom and kitchen scales and package labels. It also takes a pounds + ounces reading and turns it into total ounces, so 7 lb 6 oz becomes 118 oz and 7.375 lb.
How to use the ounces to pounds converter
- Pick a direction: ounces to pounds, pounds to ounces, or pounds + ounces to total ounces.
- Type the weight. Decimals and fractions both work: 0.75, 3/4, 1 1/2 or 1½.
- Read decimal pounds and the pounds-and-ounces breakdown. Grams and kilograms are shown too.
- Check that your number is a weight. If it says "fl oz" it is a volume, and you need a density first.
Oz to lbs formula
NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C defines the avoirdupois system with 16 ounces = 1 pound, and the pound as exactly 453.592 37 grams. The UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 uses the same pound and ounce, so the conversion is identical in the US and UK.
pounds = ounces ÷ 16(or ounces × 0.0625)ounces = pounds × 16pounds and ounces: lb = floor(oz ÷ 16); remaining oz = oz − 16 × lb
Because 16 is a power of two, every whole ounce is a clean decimal of a pound: 1 oz is 0.0625 lb, 2 oz 0.125 lb, 4 oz 0.25 lb. Fractions of a pound such as 1/3 lb are the only ones that repeat (5.333 oz).
16 oz to lbs
16 oz = 1 lb exactly, the definition. 16 oz is also 453.59237 g. A "16 oz" drink is a different thing: that is 16 fluid ounces of volume (a US pint), which weighs a little over a pound when it is water.
20 oz to lbs
20 oz = 1.25 lb = 1 lb 4 oz. Take away one pound (16 oz) and 4 oz is left over.
32 oz to lbs
32 oz = 2 lb. 48 oz is 3 lb and 64 oz is 4 lb. Each extra 16 ounces adds one pound.
12 oz and 8 oz to lbs
12 oz = 0.75 lb and 8 oz = 0.5 lb. 4 oz is a quarter pound (0.25 lb), the "quarter-pounder" size.
100 oz to lbs
100 oz = 6.25 lb = 6 lb 4 oz.

Baby weight: pounds and ounces in total ounces and grams
Newborn weights are usually written in pounds and ounces in the US and in grams elsewhere. This table converts common birth weights both ways, using the exact 453.59237 g pound.
| Weight | Total oz | Decimal lb | Grams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 lb 8 oz | 88 | 5.5 | 2,495 |
| 6 lb 0 oz | 96 | 6 | 2,722 |
| 6 lb 8 oz | 104 | 6.5 | 2,948 |
| 7 lb 0 oz | 112 | 7 | 3,175 |
| 7 lb 6 oz | 118 | 7.375 | 3,345 |
| 7 lb 8 oz | 120 | 7.5 | 3,402 |
| 8 lb 0 oz | 128 | 8 | 3,629 |
| 8 lb 4 oz | 132 | 8.25 | 3,742 |
| 9 lb 0 oz | 144 | 9 | 4,082 |
| 10 lb 0 oz | 160 | 10 | 4,536 |
A gain of 1 oz is about 28.3 g. If your pediatrician's scale shows a decimal such as 8.3 lb, that is 8 lb 4.8 oz, not 8 lb 3 oz.
Worked examples
Shipping a 37 oz parcel
37 ÷ 16 = 2.3125 lb, or 2 lb 5 oz. Carriers that price by the pound usually round up, so check whether your rate is for 2 lb or 3 lb. Rounding happens on the carrier's side; the converter shows the exact weight.
Doubling a recipe that uses 10 oz of pasta
2 × 10 oz = 20 oz = 1 lb 4 oz. A standard 1 lb box is 4 oz short.
A scale reads 2.65 lb
0.65 × 16 = 10.4 oz, so 2.65 lb = 2 lb 10.4 oz, roughly 2 lb 10 3/8 oz to the nearest sixteenth.
Meat at a price per pound
A 22 oz steak is 1.375 lb. At $12.00 per pound it costs 16.5 dollars. Divide ounces by 16 before multiplying by the per-pound price.
Ounces, fluid ounces and troy ounces
- Ounce (oz): the avoirdupois ounce, 28.349523125 g, 1/16 lb. NIST notes that "ounce" and "pound" with no qualifier mean the avoirdupois units. This page converts these.
- Troy ounce (oz t): 31.1034768 g, for precious metals. 12 troy ounces make a troy pound, so dividing by 16 is wrong.
- Fluid ounce (fl oz): a volume, 29.57 mL (US). A 12 fl oz can is not 0.75 lb; its weight depends on what is inside. For water and drinks see Oz in a Gallon and mL ↔ oz.
Common mistakes
- Treating pounds as base-10. 1.5 lb is 1 lb 8 oz, not 1 lb 5 oz. Multiply the decimal part by 16.
- Dividing by 12 or 10. A pound has 16 ounces. Twelve is the troy pound.
- Converting fluid ounces as weight. "64 oz" of water is a volume; it weighs about 4.17 lb, not 4 lb.
- Rounding before adding. Add total ounces first, then convert once, so pieces don't accumulate rounding.

Frequently asked questions
How many ounces are in a pound?
16. One avoirdupois pound is exactly 16 ounces, so 1 oz is 1/16 lb = 0.0625 lb.
How do you convert oz to lbs?
Divide the ounces by 16. For example 40 oz ÷ 16 = 2.5 lb, which is 2 lb 8 oz.
How many pounds is 20 oz?
20 oz = 1.25 lb = 1 lb 4 oz.
How many pounds is 32 oz?
32 oz = exactly 2 lb.
What is 12 oz in pounds?
12 oz = 0.75 lb, three quarters of a pound.
How many ounces is 1.5 pounds?
1.5 lb × 16 = 24 oz, which is 1 lb 8 oz — not 1 lb 5 oz.
How do I write 7.4 lb in pounds and ounces?
Multiply the decimal part by 16: 0.4 × 16 = 6.4 oz, so 7.4 lb = 7 lb 6.4 oz.
Are fluid ounces the same as ounces for pounds?
No. A fluid ounce is volume, a pound is weight. Only for water is a US fluid ounce close to a weight ounce (about 1.04 oz). Use a density, or the weight-per-gallon calculator, for liquids.
Is a troy ounce 1/16 of a pound?
No. Troy ounces are used for gold and silver; 12 troy ounces make a troy pound, and one troy ounce is 1.0971 ordinary ounces. Don't divide troy ounces by 16.
How many oz is 100 lb?
100 lb × 16 = 1,600 oz.
How many pounds is 64 oz?
64 oz = 4 lb. A 64 fl oz jug of water weighs a little more, about 4.2 lb, because it is measured by volume.
