Exact factor: 1 mile = 1.609344 km (international mile, NIST). Results are rounded only for display.

To convert km to miles, divide by 1.609344 (or multiply by 0.621371): 1 km = 0.621371 miles and 1 mile = 1.609344 km exactly. So 50 km is 31.07 miles, 20 km is 12.43 miles, 15 km is 9.32 miles and 3 km is 1.86 miles. The converter works both ways, splits the result into miles and yards, and includes a pace converter that turns minutes per kilometer into minutes per mile with race finish times.

It is meant for runners reading a metric race plan, drivers crossing between countries that sign roads in different units, cyclists comparing ride logs, and anyone checking an odometer or a travel distance. Below are anchored answers for the most-searched distances, a full 1–100 km table, larger distances up to 200,000 km, a miles to km table and a pace chart.

How to convert kilometers to miles

  1. Start with the distance in kilometers, for example 15 km.
  2. Divide by 1.609344: 15 ÷ 1.609344 = 9.320568.
  3. Round at the end. Two decimals (9.32 mi) are plenty for running and driving.
  4. For miles to kilometers, multiply instead: 9 mi × 1.609344 = 14.4841 km.
  5. To express the fraction of a mile as yards, multiply the decimal part by 1,760. A marathon is 26.2188 mi, which is 26 miles 385 yards.

The formula and why the factor is exact

miles = km ÷ 1.609344 and km = miles × 1.609344. NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C, lists 1 mile as 5,280 feet and as 1.609 344 kilometers, both marked "exactly". The exactness traces back to the 1959 Federal Register notice from the National Bureau of Standards, which fixed the yard at 0.9144 meter. A mile is 1,760 yards, and 1,760 × 0.9144 m = 1,609.344 m with no rounding. The reciprocal, 0.621371192…, never ends, which is why dividing by 1.609344 is more precise than multiplying by a rounded 0.62 or 0.621.

The international mile is the only mile this page uses. The older US survey mile, based on the survey foot of 1200/3937 m, is 1,609.347 m. The difference is 3.2 mm per mile, which matters only for legacy land survey data, not for roads, races or travel. A nautical mile is a different unit: 1,852 m, or 1.1508 statute miles.

Most-searched kilometer distances in miles

Each answer below uses the exact factor. Link to a specific one by adding its anchor to the URL.

Pace: min/km to min/mile

A pace is time per unit of distance, so a mile pace is longer than a kilometer pace by the same 1.609344 factor. Convert the pace to seconds, multiply by 1.609344, then turn it back into minutes and seconds. A 5:30 /km pace is 330 s × 1.609344 = 531.1 s, which is 8:51 per mile. The pace converter in the tool above accepts m:ss or decimal minutes.

Worked examples

A 70,000 km car

70,000 ÷ 1.609344 = 43,496 miles. When comparing a used car listed in kilometers with one listed in miles, convert both to the same unit first; a rounded 0.6 factor would understate this odometer by about 1,496 miles.

A 120 km drive at 90 km/h

Distance: 120 km = 74.56 miles. Time: 120 ÷ 90 = 1.333 h, or 1 h 20 min. Speed and distance convert with the same factor, so for speed conversions use the km/h to mph converter.

Training for a half marathon in miles

A plan says "run 16 km at 6:15 /km". Distance: 9.94 miles. Pace: 375 s × 1.609344 = 604 s, or 10:04 per mile. Time: 16 × 375 s = 1:40:00.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying when you should divide. Miles are longer than kilometers, so the number of miles is always smaller. If 20 km comes out as 32, you multiplied by 1.609 instead of dividing.
  • Using 0.6 for long distances. 0.6 is 3.4% low. On 500 km that is 10.7 miles of error, enough to misjudge a fuel stop.
  • Treating a half marathon as 21 km. It is 21.0975 km, or 13.1094 miles. Watches that auto-lap every kilometer will show a little extra at the finish.
  • Confusing statute and nautical miles. Sea and air navigation use the 1,852 m nautical mile; road distances use the 1,609.344 m statute mile.
  • Converting pace with the wrong direction. A pace per mile is always longer (slower-looking) than the same pace per km. 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mi, not 3:06.
