The Navy PRT scores three events — push-ups, forearm plank and a cardio event — from 45 to 100 points each against tables for your sex and age group. You pass with at least Probationary (45) in every event; your overall category is the one that matches your average. This calculator uses PRP Guide-5A, in effect since 1 January 2026.
How to use this Navy PRT calculator
- Enter your age and sex, and choose the altitude: Guide-5A has separate tables above 5,000 ft.
- Set "Combat arms" to Yes if you are in a combat arms occupation; you are then scored on the male table against Good-High.
- Enter push-ups completed in 2 minutes and your forearm plank time.
- Choose your cardio event (1.5-mile run, 2,000 m row, 500 yd or 450 m swim) and enter your time as m:ss.
- Read each event's points and category, the average, the overall category and the pass line.
How the PRT is scored
Each event is compared with 12 threshold rows in Table 4-1 (or 4-2 above 5,000 ft). The overall score is "a category-level performance corresponding to the average of points" from the three events (Guide-5A section 1.5):
Average = (push-up points + plank points + cardio points) ÷ 3
| Category | Points (High / Medium / Low) | What it represents (Guide-5A 1.4) |
|---|---|---|
| Outstanding | 100 / 95 / 90 | At or above the top 10th percentile |
| Excellent | 85 / 80 / 75 | Top 25th percentile, below Outstanding |
| Good | 70 / 65 / 60 | At or above the lowest 25th percentile |
| Satisfactory | 55 / 50 | Bottom 25th percentile, above the lowest 10th |
| Probationary | 45 | Lowest passing category |
| Failure | below 45 | Lowest 10th percentile |
The pass rule is per event, not per average: a high average cannot cover an event below Probationary.
Worked examples
1. Male, age 22
| Event | Result | Points · category |
|---|---|---|
| Push-ups | 60 | 65 · Good Medium |
| Forearm plank | 1:10 | 45 · Probationary |
| 1.5-mile run | 11:00 | 65 · Good Medium |
Average 58.3, overall Satisfactory High. A pass — but the Probationary event means enrollment in the Fitness Enhancement Program until a Good-Low or better PFA.
2. Female, age 34, rower
| Event | Result | Points · category |
|---|---|---|
| Push-ups | 30 | 70 · Good High |
| Forearm plank | 1:40 | 60 · Good Low |
| 2,000 m row | 9:20 | 70 · Good High |
Average 66.7, overall Good Medium. A pass with no event at Probationary.
3. Combat arms Sailor, age 27 (male table, Good-High needed)
| Event | Result | Points · category |
|---|---|---|
| Push-ups | 50 | 60 · Good Low |
| Forearm plank | 2:30 | 70 · Good High |
| 1.5-mile run | 12:00 | 65 · Good Medium |
Average 65.0, overall Good Medium. Below the combat arms standard: every event must reach Good-High (70) on the male table.

Navy PRT event standards
The event rules below are summarized from Guide-5A section 3. Events run in a fixed order — push-ups, plank, then cardio — on the same day, with 5 to 15 minutes between them.
Push-ups (2 minutes)
Start in the leaning rest with feet no more than hip-width apart and hands under or slightly wider than the shoulders. Lower until the elbows bend to at least 90 degrees, keeping the body straight, then push back up without locking the elbows. You may rest only in the up position. "Pulsing" push-ups don't count, and the event ends if anything but hands and feet touches the deck or a hand or foot lifts.
Forearm plank
Elbows directly under the shoulders at 90 degrees, hands in fists or flat but not clasped, feet hip-width apart, body straight from head to heels with the face toward the deck. The plank ends at the maximum time, if you lower your head to your hands, lift a hand, forearm or foot, shift off the 90-degree elbow angle, or on the third form correction.
1.5-mile run or walk
Any mix of running and walking on a flat track or course, timed to the nearest second. A short cut or an unfinished course (other than for injury) is recorded as 59:59.
Alternate cardio
Only with CO/OIC approval for the cycle, and only on a machine you have practiced on. The 2,000 m row uses a Concept2 Model D or E with a PM3–PM5 monitor; the damper is set before the start and can't be changed. The treadmill runs at a fixed 1.0% incline and the stopwatch, not the console, is official. The swim starts in the water (no dive), any stroke, with no fins or flotation. The stationary bike is 12 minutes scored on calories through the PFA app.
Cycles, retests and consequences
- Cycles: two per year — 1 January to 30 June and 1 July to 31 December. Results from one cycle can't count for another.
- Bad Day PRT: one CO-approved retest per cycle after medical screening; not for raising a passing score.
- High-performance BCA exemption: a Sailor over the body-fat limit still gets an overall PFA pass with an Outstanding-Low or better PRT and every event at Excellent-Medium or better, but stays in FEP (Guide-1 section 8).
- Failures: three PFA failures in the most recent 4 years means administrative separation processing for enlisted Sailors.
Common mistakes
- Planking past the cap. Time beyond 3:24 (men) or 3:14 (women) scores nothing; save the energy for cardio.
- Picking the rower or swim on test day without CO approval or practice — the CFL must reschedule you rather than test you.
- Reading your overall category as a pass. It is the per-event minimum that decides pass or fail.
Reading results between rows
Each event scores 100, 95 or 90 (Outstanding High/Medium/Low), 85/80/75 (Excellent), 70/65/60 (Good), 55/50 (Satisfactory) or 45 (Probationary). Anything below the Probationary row is a Failure. The tables list only these 12 rows; this calculator gives the best row your result meets, which is our reading because Guide-5A publishes no interpolation rule.
This tool is unofficial and not medical advice; complete your medical screening before the PFA, and treat PRIMS as the record. See also the Army AFT, USMC PFT and Air Force PT calculators, or the TSP calculator for your Thrift Savings Plan.
Frequently asked questions
What is a passing Navy PRT score?
You need at least Probationary (45 points) in every event — push-ups, forearm plank and cardio — for your sex and age group. Failing any one event fails the PRT. A Probationary score in any event places you in the Fitness Enhancement Program until you pass with Good-Low or better in all events (PRP Guide-1 section 7a).
How many push-ups for Outstanding in the Navy PRT?
For men aged 17–19, 92 push-ups in 2 minutes earns 100 points (Outstanding High) and 42 is the Probationary minimum.
What is the maximum plank time?
The plank stops at 3:24 for men and 3:14 for women (Guide-5A section 3.2). Holding longer earns nothing extra.
What cardio options are there?
The 1.5-mile run, or with commanding officer approval a treadmill 1.5 miles, a 2,000 m row, a 500 yd or 450 m swim, or a 12-minute stationary bike scored on calories. The bike has no published table — the Navy's PFA app calculates it from the bike model.
What standard do combat arms Sailors need?
Good-High (70 points) or better in every event, scored on the male table for their age group (PRP Guide-1 section 7b). Below that they join the Fitness Enhancement Program until they reach Good-High.
How is the overall PRT category decided?
The Navy uses the category that matches the average of your event points. Guide-5A does not say exactly how an average between rows maps to a category; this calculator rounds down to the row at or below the average.
When are the 2026 PFA cycles?
Cycle 1 runs 1 January – 30 June and cycle 2 runs 1 July – 31 December 2026. Active Component Sailors complete two fitness assessments a year and Reserve Component Sailors at least one (NAVADMIN 264/25).
What is a Bad Day PRT?
Commanding officers may grant a medically cleared Sailor one retest per PFA cycle. It must be done within 7 working days of medical clearance and within 45 days of the body composition assessment, and it cannot be used to improve a passing score (PRP Guide-1).
What happens if I don't finish the run?
If you take a short cut or don't complete the 1.5 miles for reasons other than injury, the cardio event is recorded as 59:59 in PRIMS, which fails the PRT (Guide-5A section 3.3).
How many PFA failures lead to separation?
Enlisted Sailors who fail to meet PFA standards three times in the most recent 4-year period are processed for administrative separation (PRP Guide-1 section 9). NAVADMIN 264/25 reset prior failures to zero on 1 January 2026 for reenlistment, advancement, promotion and continuation decisions.
