Anniversary Calculator

This anniversary calculator shows how long it has been since a wedding, a first date or any other start date, in years, months and days together, plus the next anniversary and how many days away it is. It also lists milestone dates such as 100 days, 1,000 days and 10,000 days, the weekday of each coming anniversary, and the classic and modern gift for the year you're about to celebrate. Leave “calculate as of” on today, or set a past or future date to see where you stood or will stand then.

How to use the anniversary calculator

1. Enter the original date: the wedding day, the day you became a couple, or a hire or start date.
2. Leave the as-of date on today, or pick another date to plan a party or check a past milestone.
3. If the original date is 29 February, choose whether the anniversary is kept on 28 February or 1 March in common years.
4. Read the time together, the full years, and the totals in months, weeks and days.
5. Check the next anniversary, the days until it and the traditional gift for that year. Open the list of the next ten anniversaries to see which ones fall on a weekend.

How anniversary years, months and days are counted

The count works the way people say it: first the full years, then the full months since the last anniversary, then the leftover days. A full year is reached on the anniversary itself, not before. A June 15, 2020 wedding completes its sixth year on June 15, 2026. On June 14, 2026 it is still five years, eleven months and some days. From that start, as of Monday, September 28, 2026, the calculator shows 6 years, 3 months and 13 days, or 2,296 days in total (328 full weeks, 75 full months).

The month step follows the calendar too. One month after January 31 is taken as the last day of February, because February has no 31st; the leftover days are counted from there. This is also how the age calculator counts birthdays, so the two tools agree.

Why days ÷ 365 gives the wrong answer

Dividing total days by 365 drifts, because every leap day adds a 366th day to its year. The Gregorian calendar adds 97 leap days every 400 years to track a tropical year of about 365.2422 days (U.S. Naval Observatory). Over a 40-year marriage, that is about 10 extra days, so “14,600 days” lands roughly 10 days before the 40th anniversary. The calculator counts real calendar dates, so it never has that error.

Your next anniversary

The next anniversary is the next time the original month and day come round, on or after the as-of date. If today is the anniversary, the calculator says so and shows zero days to go. The number of the anniversary is the year of the next occurrence minus the starting year. For the example start, as of Monday, September 28, 2026, the next one is the 7th anniversary on Tuesday, June 15, 2027, 260 days away. That falls on a Tuesday. The dropdown list under the results shows the weekday of the next ten anniversaries, which helps if you want to plan a dinner or a trip for a year when the date falls on a Friday or Saturday.

Milestone dates: 100 days, 1,000 days and half-years

Not every milestone is a whole year. Many people also mark 100 days, 1,000 days or a half-year. Day milestones are pure day counts, so they don't land on the same calendar date each time: 1,000 days is just under 2 years and 9 months, and 10,000 days is a little over 27 years and 4 months. Half-year milestones count calendar months: 6, 18, 30 and so on after the start, clamped to the month's last day when needed. The table uses the example start date; the calculator lists the next six milestones for your own date and charts how many days away each one is.

Anniversary years: names and gifts by year

Anniversary names and gift materials are a tradition, not a standard. The oldest list here is primary: Emily Post's 1922 Etiquette (p. 378, Project Gutenberg) names eight anniversaries: 1 paper, 5 wood, 10 tin, 15 crystal, 20 china, 25 silver, 50 gold and 75 diamond. She adds that paper, wooden and tin presents “are seldom anything but jokes.” Note that 1922 put diamond at the 75th; today's lists move it to the 60th. The Emily Post Institute says that in 1937 the American National Retail Jeweler Association filled in most of the rest of the list. Treat the table as inspiration rather than obligation. The classic, modern, stone and flower columns below are the Institute's published list. Years not listed, such as 11 to 14, have no entry in that source, and other lists online disagree for those years.

The big names are the ones institutions use too. The Royal Household describes the 60th as the diamond wedding. It records that the late Queen and Prince Philip, married on 20 November 1947, celebrated their golden wedding in 1997, and that in 2007 she became the first British monarch to reach a diamond wedding anniversary. In the UK, a message from the Sovereign can be requested for the 60th, 65th and 70th anniversaries and every year after that. Applications are accepted up to 5 weeks ahead online, or no sooner than 3 weeks ahead by post, and the card is not sent automatically. In the U.S., the White House greetings form offers wedding-anniversary greetings for the 25th, the 50th and the 51st onward.

Anniversary years by wedding year (2026)

Look up the wedding year to see which anniversary falls in 2026 and the classic gift for it, where the list has one. The number is the same whatever the month and day. Only whether it has already happened this year depends on the date, which the calculator checks for you.

29 February anniversaries

A leap-day start date has a real anniversary only in leap years. Under the Gregorian rule, years divisible by 4 are leap years except century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, and 2100 won't be (USNO). For a couple married on 29 February 2024, the true date returns in 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040 and so on. Because 2100 is skipped, the gap after 2096 is eight years, to 2104. In the three common years between, you pick a stand-in:

• February 28 (the default) keeps the celebration in February and lands on the last day before the missing date.
• March 1 treats the anniversary as the first day after February 28, the date some couples prefer because February is “over” by then.

The choice changes the full-year count by a day. With February 28, a 29 February 2024 wedding shows 1 full year on 28 February 2025; with March 1 it shows 0 until 1 March 2025. For 2027, the calculator puts the anniversary on Sunday, February 28, 2027 by default, or Monday, March 1, 2027 with the March 1 option. Total days are unaffected, because they count real dates.

Common mistakes

• Counting the anniversary before the date. Subtracting years alone overstates the count for part of every year. In January, a June wedding is still in its previous year.
• Mixing up “years married” and “which anniversary”. After your 10th anniversary you are in your 11th year of marriage. The next one to celebrate is the 11th, but the gift lists are keyed to anniversaries, not years in progress.
• Assuming a round number of days is a round number of years. 365 days after a date is one year only when no 29 February falls in between.
• Forgetting the time zone. A wedding abroad happened on the local calendar date there. Enter that date, not the date it was at home.
