A 5K is 3.107 miles (5 kilometers). A 10K is 6.21 miles, a 15K is 9.32 miles, a 25K is 15.53 miles, a half marathon is 13.11 miles and a marathon is 26.22 miles.
This page converts every common road race distance to miles and adds what you actually want to know on race day: how many steps it is, how long it takes to walk, and what pace a finish time works out to. Pick a race, type a goal time, and the calculator gives the distance in miles, kilometers and feet, the step count and the pace per mile and per kilometer.
How to use this calculator
- Choose a race distance, from 1K to 100K, or pick Custom and enter any distance in km.
- Read the distance in miles at the top.
- Enter a goal or past finish time (for example
27:30or1:58:00) to see the pace per mile, pace per km and average speed. - Check the chart for how long the race takes at walking and running speeds.
How race distances are converted
A mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters (NIST Handbook 44), so miles = kilometers ÷ 1.609344, or kilometers × 0.621371. Road races named in kilometers use exact metric lengths; the half marathon and marathon are defined by World Athletics as 21.0975 km and 42.195 km. Steps are estimated from the walking step lengths measured in the CADENCE-Adults study, scaled to height, and running step lengths from a 2025 cadence study — the same method as the steps to miles calculator.

CDC counts walking at 2.5 mph or faster as moderate-intensity activity. Many races set a cut-off time, so check the event's rules if you plan to walk a half or full marathon; for any other distance, the walking time calculator adds arrival times.
Worked examples
Pace for a 30-minute 5K
1,800 seconds ÷ 5 km = 360 seconds per km = 6:00 per km. × 1.609344 = 9:39 per mile, an average of 6.21 mph.
A 25K in miles
25 ÷ 1.609344 = 15.534 miles. That is 2.42 miles more than a half marathon and about 26,284 running steps at a 10-minute mile.
Steps in a 10K walk
At 3 mph the CADENCE-Adults step length scaled to an average-height woman is 0.669 m, so 10,000 m ÷ that = about 14,941 steps; for an average-height man, about 13,770.
Marathon at the same pace as your 10K
A 50-minute 10K is 5:00 per km. Held for 42.195 km that would be 3:30:59, but nearly everyone slows over the longer distance, so treat an even-pace projection as a best case.
Common race distance headlines
- 5K: 3.1069 miles · 5 km
- 10K: 6.2137 miles · 10 km
- Half marathon: 13.1094 miles · 21.0975 km
- Marathon: 26.2188 miles · 42.195 km
Race names usually round: a 5K is “3.1 miles”, a 10K “6.2”, a half “13.1” and a marathon “26.2”. The rounding is small for a 5K but grows with distance — 26.2 miles is 42.165 km, about 30 m short of a marathon.
Common mistakes
- Using 1.6 km per mile. It makes a marathon 26.37 miles instead of 26.22.
- Calling a half marathon 21 km. The official distance is 21.0975 km — 97.5 m longer.
- Assuming walking and running steps are the same. Running steps are longer, so a run uses roughly a quarter fewer steps than a walk over the same distance.
- Projecting a marathon from a 5K with no slowdown. Even pace across distances is a best case.
- Trusting GPS over the course. Watches usually read long on certified courses.

Frequently asked questions
How many miles is a 5K?
A 5K is 5 kilometers, which is 3.1069 miles — about 3.1 miles. That is 16,404 feet or 5,468 yards.
How many miles is a 10K?
6.2137 miles, about 6.2 miles: exactly twice a 5K.
How many miles is a 15K?
9.3206 miles, about 9.3 miles.
How many miles is a 25K?
15.5343 miles, about 15.5 miles — a little over 2 miles longer than a half marathon.
How many miles is a half marathon?
13.1094 miles (21.0975 km), usually written as 13.1 miles.
How many miles is a marathon?
26.2188 miles (42.195 km), usually written as 26.2 miles.
How long does it take to walk a 5K?
About 1:02:08 at a brisk 3 mph and 46:36 at a fast 4 mph. At a relaxed 2.5 mph it takes about 1:14:34.
How many steps is a 5K?
About 7,471–6,885 steps walking at 3 mph for average-height US women and men (5′3.5″ and 5′8.9″), and about 5,257 running at a 10-minute mile, because running steps are longer.
What pace is a 30-minute 5K?
6:00 per km, or 9:39 per mile (6.21 mph).
Is a 5K exactly 3.1 miles?
No. It is 3.10686 miles; 3.1 miles is 4,989 m, about 11 m short. Certified courses measure the full 5,000 m.
Why does my GPS watch say my 5K was longer?
Certified road courses are measured along the shortest possible route a runner could take. Runners weave and take wider lines, and GPS adds noise, so watches commonly read a little over the official distance.
