To convert min/km to min/mile, multiply the pace by 1.609344; to go from min/mile to min/km, divide by 1.609344. For example, 5:00 per km = 8:03 per mile, and a 10:00 mile = 6:13 per km. Speed in mph or km/h is 60 divided by the pace in minutes.
Type a pace (mm:ss) or a speed, pick its unit, and the converter returns all four forms at once — minutes per kilometer, minutes per mile, miles per hour and kilometers per hour — plus your finish time for a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon at that pace. Switching the unit converts the entry in place, so the tool also works as a quick treadmill speed-to-pace lookup.
How to use the pace converter
- Enter your pace as minutes and seconds, such as
5:45, or a speed such as6.5. - Choose the unit you entered: min per km, min per mile, mph or km/h.
- Read the converted pace and speeds on the right, and the race finish times below them.
- Change the unit drop-down to flip your number into another unit without retyping.
- Copy the link to share or save the result; the URL keeps your pace.
The formulas
Everything comes from one exact definition: an international mile is 1,609.344 meters (NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C), so 1 mile = 1.609344 km.
- min/km → min/mile: pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344
- min/mile → min/km: pace per km = pace per mile ÷ 1.609344
- pace → speed: km/h = 60 ÷ minutes per km; mph = 60 ÷ minutes per mile
- speed → pace: minutes per mile = 60 ÷ mph; minutes per km = 60 ÷ km/h
- mph ↔ km/h: km/h = mph × 1.609344
- miles per minute → mph: mph = miles per minute × 60
- finish time = pace per km × race distance in km
The trick to doing it by hand is to convert the pace to seconds first. 5:45 per km is 345 seconds; × 1.609344 = 555.2 seconds, which is 9:15 per mile. Converting minutes and seconds separately (5 × 1.609 and 45 × 1.609) gives the wrong answer, because seconds roll over at 60, not 100.

Race finish times by pace
Finish times at an even pace for the four most common road distances. Race lengths follow World Athletics: the half marathon is 21.0975 km (13.1094 miles) and the marathon 42.195 km (26.2188 miles). For every distance in miles, see 5K in miles and other race distances.

Worked examples
A 10-minute mile in min/km
600 seconds ÷ 1.609344 = 372.8 seconds per km, which rounds to 6:13 per km. As a speed that is 6 mph or 9.66 km/h, and a 5K would take 31:04.
5:30 per km in min/mile
330 seconds × 1.609344 = 531.1 seconds, or 8:51 per mile (10.91 km/h). Held for a 10K, that is a 55:00 finish.
Treadmill at 6.5 mph
60 ÷ 6.5 = 9.231 minutes per mile, so 9:14 per mile, which is 5:44 per km. A half marathon at that speed takes 2:01:01.
Miles per minute
A cyclist covering 0.25 miles per minute is riding 0.25 × 60 = 15 mph (24.14 km/h), a pace of 4:00 per mile.
Pace, speed and why runners use both
Pace (time per distance) is what runners plan and race with, because it maps directly onto split times: a 5:00 km pace means passing each kilometer marker five minutes apart. Speed (distance per time) is what treadmills, cars and cycling computers show. The two are reciprocals, so equal steps in speed are unequal steps in pace. Going from 6 to 7 mph cuts 1:26 off each mile, while going from 9 to 10 mph cuts only 0:40. That is why the charts above are not evenly spaced.
Most of the world uses kilometers, so race plans from training apps, coaches and European events are usually in min/km, while US and UK road races mark miles. Many marathons mark both, which is when a quick conversion table helps. The same mile-to-kilometer factor drives the km to miles converter and the km/h to mph converter.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying minutes and seconds separately. Convert the whole pace to seconds, multiply or divide by 1.609344, then convert back.
- Treating 5.30 as 5:30. 5.30 decimal minutes is 5:18; 5:30 is 5.5 minutes.
- Using 1.6 instead of 1.609344. The shortcut drifts by about 2.5 seconds per mile at a 7:00 pace and adds up over a marathon.
- Assuming a half marathon is 21 km. It is 21.0975 km; the extra 97.5 m costs about 30 seconds at 5:00 per km.
- Mixing up direction. A per-mile pace is always the larger number; if your converted mile pace is smaller than your km pace, you divided instead of multiplied.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace per kilometer by 1.609344, because a mile is 1.609344 km. 5:00 per km × 1.609344 = 8:03 per mile. Work in seconds to avoid errors: 300 s × 1.609344 = 482.8 s = 8:03.
How do I convert min/mile to min/km?
Divide the pace per mile by 1.609344. A 10:00 mile (600 s) ÷ 1.609344 = 372.8 s, which is 6:13 per km.
What is 5:30 per km in minutes per mile?
8:51 per mile, which is 6.78 mph or 10.91 km/h.
How do I turn mph into pace?
Divide 60 by the speed to get minutes per mile. 6.5 mph → 60 ÷ 6.5 = 9.231 minutes, which is 9:14 per mile and 5:44 per km.
How do I convert miles per minute to miles per hour?
Multiply by 60. 0.1 miles per minute is 6 mph; 0.15 miles per minute is 9 mph. Going the other way, divide mph by 60.
What pace is a 25-minute 5K?
5:00 per km, or 8:03 per mile (12 km/h, 7.46 mph). The same pace held for a marathon would finish in 3:30:59.
What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?
Faster than 5:41 per km, which is 9:09 per mile (about 10.55 km/h). Course measurement adds a small allowance, and watches read GPS distance long, so most runners aim a few seconds per km faster.
What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?
5:41 per km, which is 9:09 per mile, or 10.55 km/h.
Why does my treadmill pace differ from my watch?
Treadmills set belt speed in mph or km/h; a wrist GPS or footpod estimates distance on a moving belt and is often off by a few percent. Use the treadmill speed and this converter for pace on a treadmill.
Is a faster pace a bigger or smaller number?
Smaller. Pace is time per distance, so 7:00 per mile is faster than 9:00 per mile. Speed is the reverse: a bigger mph number is faster.
